TEOTITLAN, OAXACA, MEXICO - JULY 9: The town of Teotitlan del Valle, as seen from the top of the Preciosa Sangre de Cristo Church. Teotitlán del Valle is a small village and municipality located in the Tlacolula District in the east of the Valles Centrales Region, 30 minutes from the city of Oaxaca in the foothills of the Sierra Juárez mountains. It is part of the Tlacolula Valley district. The town lies at the foot of El Picacho, which is considered the sacred mountain of Teotitlán.
The name Teotitlán comes from Nahuatl and means âland of the godsâ. Its Zapotec name is Xaguixe, which means âat the foot of the mountainâ. It was one of the first villages founded by the Zapotecs in this area, in 1465, and it still retains its Zapotec culture and language. Photo by Sara Naomi Lewkowicz/Getty Images Reportage
